A calm, do-it-together starting point.
Check your alarms
Smoke alarms on every level and outside bedrooms; CO detectors near sleeping areas. Test monthly, replace sealed-battery units every ten years.
Put an extinguisher where fires start
A 5 lb ABC extinguisher near the kitchen — the source of most home fires — and one in the garage. Learn the PASS technique before you need it.
Build a two-minute escape plan
Two ways out of every room, a meeting spot outside, and a drill kids can actually follow at 2 a.m. Practice it twice a year.
Sleep with doors closed
A closed bedroom door can buy you precious minutes against smoke and fire. It’s one of the simplest protections there is.
